ACE CEO confident in long-term viability of ethanol

The CEO of the American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE) is confident corn-based ethanol will remain a viable fuel source for years to come.

ACE CEO Brian Jennings says as the industry watches emerging technologies like electric vehicles, ethanol should continue to be a low-cost, low-carbon, and high-octane choice for consumers.

“We are confident that a higher octane fuel is going to be necessary in the future.  It’s a matter of when, not if.”

He tells Brownfield oil refiners can produce high-octane fuel, but not as efficiently as ethanol plants.

“And I think the linchpin for the ethanol industry is high-octane fuel from refineries is not low-carbon.”

Jennings says the greenhouse gas footprint of corn ethanol is improving all the time, and he hopes a program like the California low-carbon fuel standard becomes a model for the U.S.

“We’re trying to position our industry to be a big part of that solution down the road based on the low-carbon attributes.”

Brownfield interviewed Jennings at the ACE ethanol conference in Minneapolis Friday.
