Apple TV+‘s Shrinking is adding an Emmy winner to its season three cast.
Jeff Daniels will guest-star in the comedy’s third season, playing Jimmy’s (Jason Segel) father. The two-time Emmy winner joins a cast that also includes Harrison Ford, Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley; co-creator Brett Goldstein recurred in season two.
Details of how Jimmy’s dad enters the show are being kept quiet for now. Season two ended with Jimmy forgiving the drunk driver (Goldstein) who caused the accident that left him widowed — and himself for how he had previously handled his relationship with his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell).

“You want Jimmy to get to the point where he would leave it all behind for Alice, including his therapy practice and all that,” Segel told The Hollywood Reporter when season two concluded. “I think that’s what makes it the primary relationship. So much of it, to me, is about getting that dynamic the right size and wading through these different combinations of who is parenting who at what moment, until finally, it ends up where it’s supposed to be, where Jimmy is taking care of his daughter because he failed so spectacularly at that when the thing happened. A relationship between a parent and a child should be built on this idea that when the thing happens, you will be protected and taken care of by your parents, and Jimmy ran away. And so, for me, a huge part of this character arc is Jimmy making right by that, because everything else is forgivable, except maybe that.”
Daniels most recently starred in Netflix’s limited series A Man in Full. Though he’s acted in a number of comedy films — notably the Dumb and Dumber movies — Shrinking will be Daniels’ first onscreen role in a comedy series (he has done voice work on Frasier and Family Guy). He is repped by LBI, Martino Management and Rogers & Cowan PMK.
Segel, Bill Lawrence and Goldstein co-created Shrinking. They executive produced season two with Neil Goldman, James Ponsoldt, Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer, Randall Winston, Annie Mebane, Rachna Fruchbom and Brian Gallivan. Ashley Nicole Black and Bill Posley will also be EPs for season three. Warner Bros. TV produces the series in association with Lawrence’s Doozer Productions.
