WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Foxtrot, the food market chain known for its coffee and wine as well as other specialties, said Tuesday that it would be closing all of its stores across the nation, including locations in D.C., Virginia, and Maryland.

In a news release, the chain said that it would begin closing all 33 of its stores immediately.

Foxtrot operated seven stores in D.C., locations in Old Town Alexandria and Rosslyn in Virginia, and one store in Bethesda, Md.

“It is such a shock, I love Foxtrot. The people that work there are super friendly,” Sarah Pekkanen, a regular customer at Foxtrot, told DC News Now.

Pekkanen, along with hundreds of customers throughout the Washington Metropolitan called the closure “shocking,” stating that they often used the famous chain’s stores as a hub to congregate.

“This is the place my coworkers come and hang out and get some coffee in the morning,” Alexis McGraw explained. “It’s kind of always our fun vibes.”

Foxtrot’s other locations in the U.S. included Chicago, Dallas and Austin.

Customers were worried about soon-to-be empty store lots throughout the area in the face of the closures.

“There’s going to be a vacancy. I hate seeing vacancies in and sort of busy area and like… there might be a lot of inventory that [goes] to waste,” said Luke Dufour, who often went to several Foxtrots throughout the area.

“It was pretty shocking because I commute through this area every day and in the morning, I stop and get coffee, and in the afternoon, I stop and get a beer,” said Hunter Sears, who said he was worried about not finding a similar substitute to Foxtrot.

A release posted online said that all credits and member perks expired on Tuesday as well.

“We explored many avenues to continue the business but found no viable option despite good faith and exhaustive efforts,” the statement said.

The company also closed two Dom’s Kitchen & Market locations, a Chicago-based store chain that had merged with Foxtrot in November 2023.
