    Madurai-Theni daily train service to begin from May 27

    Southern Railway has announced the introduction of a new unreserved express special train between Tamil Nadu's Madurai and Theni districts on the newly laid broad gauge railway line from May 27. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the train service and inaugurate the broad gauge line on May 26. The train will leave Madurai at 8.30 am and from the Theni district, it will start at 6.15 pm daily. It will stop at Vadapalanchi, Usilampatti and Andipatti stations.

    J-K records five fresh COVID-19 cases

    Jammu and Kashmir on Monday recorded five fresh COVID-19 cases that took its tally to 4,54,204, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,752, officials said. Of the fresh cases, three were reported from the Jammu division and two from the Kashmir division of the union territory, they said. Seventeen of the total 20 districts in Jammu and Kashmir did not report any fresh cases.

    New monkeypox case confirmed in Canary Islands

    Health authorities in the Canary Islands on Monday confirmed a case of monkeypox in Gran Canaria, bringing the total number of cases in Spain to date to 35. Authorities are awaiting the results of five more tests for "probable" cases of the virus, while eight more of Spain's autonomous communities are also analyzing possible cases. The case confirmed on Monday is the first outside the Madrid region.

    Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday terminated the services of a civil judge with immediate effect, an official order said. The order, issued by the department of law, justice and parliamentary affairs (judicial administration section), informed the removal of the Civil Judge (Junior Division)/Munsiff Naveen Jamwal. No reason was specified for Jamwal's termination.

    MP sees 32 COVID-19 cases, no death; active tally now 275

    The COVID-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh reached 10,42,243 on Monday after the detection of 32 cases, while the fatality count stood unchanged at 10,735, an official said. The positivity rate was 0.5 per cent, while the recovery count increased by 22 to touch 10,31,233, leaving the state with 275 active cases, the official informed. With 6,037 samples examined during the day, the number of tests in MP went up to 2,92,47,111, he added.

    Tamil Nadu government on Monday directed the district Collectors and Commissioners of Corporations to monitor and identify suspected cases of monkeypox, if any, and isolate them at healthcare facilities for appropriate treatment. Asking the officials to watch out for any symptoms among the people on this viral zoonotic disease, State Health and Family Welfare Principal Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan said those who have travelled in the last 21 days to a country that has recently confirmed or suspected cases of the monkeypox should be monitored.

    Telangana logs 27 new COVID-19 cases

    Twenty-seven new COVID-19 cases were recorded in Telangana on Monday taking the tally in the state to 7,92,898, a health department bulletin said. As no deaths due to the infection was reported on the day, the fatality toll remained at 4,111, it said. Hyderabad accounted for the highest number of 17 cases. A total of 52 people recovered from the infection taking the cumulative number of recoveries till date to 7,88,415.

    Mumbai reports 150 new coronavirus cases, zero death

    Mumbai reported 150 new coronavirus cases on Monday, 63 less compared to the previous day, but no death due to the infection was registered in the city, the civic body said. With this, Mumbai's overall tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 10,63,058, while the death toll remained unchanged at 19,566, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a bulletin. On Sunday, the financial capital had logged 213 COVID-19 cases and zero fatalities.

    Duty cut on petrol, diesel to put pressure on fiscal deficit: Experts

    The Centre's decision to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel will put pressure on the fiscal deficit which has been estimated at 6.4 per cent of GDP for the current financial year, experts said. The government on Saturday cut excise duty on petrol by a record Rs 8 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 6 to give relief to consumers reeling under high fuel prices that have also pushed inflation to a multi-year high. The tax reduction on petrol and diesel will lead to revenue loss of around Rs 1 lakh crore per year for the government.

    India sends 40,000 MT of petrol to crisis-hit Sri Lanka

    India on Monday said it has delivered around 40,000 metric tonnes of petrol to Sri Lanka, days after supplying 40,000 metric tonnes of diesel under the Indian credit line to help ease the acute fuel shortage in the debt-ridden island nation which is grappling with its worst economic crisis. India extended an additional USD 500 million credit line to Sri Lanka last month to help the neighbouring country import fuel as it has been struggling to pay for imports after its foreign exchange reserves plummeted sharply in recent times, causing a devaluation of its currency and spiralling inflation.

    Starbucks leaving Russian market, shutting 130 stores

    Starbucks is pulling out of the Russian market. In a memo to employees Monday, the Seattle coffee giant said it decided to close its 130 stores and no longer have a brand presence in Russia. Starbucks said it will continue to pay its nearly 2,000 Russian employees for six months and help them transition to new jobs. Starbucks' move follows McDonald's exit from the Russian market last week. McDonald's is selling its stores __ which are almost all owned by the company __ to an existing Russian franchisee. The stores won't be allowed to use McDonald's name or menu.

    Zomato Q4 net loss widens to Rs 360 cr

    Online food delivery platform Zomato on Monday reported widening of its consolidated net loss at Rs 359.7 crore in the fourth quarter ended March 2022, impacted by higher expenses. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 134.2 crore in the same period of the previous fiscal, Zomato said in a regulatory filing. Consolidated revenue from operations during the quarter under review stood at Rs 1,211.8 crore, as against Rs 692.4 crore in the year-ago period.

    Building collapse kills 5 people, injures many in south Iran

    At least five people were killed when a 10-story commercial building still under construction collapsed Monday in the southwestern Iranian city of Abadan, state TV reported. There were fears the casualty toll could be much higher as more than 80 people were still believed trapped under the rubble after the Metropol building toppled, burying shops and even some cars in the surrounding streets, the report said. Ehsun Abbaspour, the Abadan regional governor, told state TV that there were 27 injured in the collapse on Amir Kabir Street, some in critical condition.

    Delhi on Monday reported 268 fresh COVID-19 cases, while the positivity rate stood at 2.69 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department. With this, Delhi's COVID-19 tally increased to 19,03,822. The death toll remained unchanged at 26,201. A total of 9,976 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the national capital the previous day, the department said in its latest bulletin.

    Over 70 per cent of the companies that have their global capability centres (GCC) and engineering services provider arms in India are planning to increase their budget in the range of 10-25 per cent this year, according to a joint survey by Deloitte and industry body Nasscom. ER&D (Engineering R&D) spend in India GCCs within 'automotive and transportation' and 'industrial' sectors is expected to grow the most, and predicted to be in the range of 10-25 per cent, the survey report said.

    Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) on Monday said it has signed a USD 100 million loan agreement with Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), along with three Japanese private financial institutions -- MUFG Bank Ltd, Bank of Kyoto Ltd and Hachijuni Bank Ltd -- aimed at supporting the Indian healthcare sector for combating COVID-19.     K'taka: Court to hear case against Cong leaders over padayatra during COVID curbs

    A city magistrate court on Tuesday will hear a case against 27 state Congress leaders, including Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar and former chief minister Siddaramaiah, who are charged under various sections of the Epidemic Diseases Act for taking out a 'padayatra' during COVID-19 restrictions. The case was filed against them by the Ramanagara Rural police on March 17 this year after they undertook a 'padayatra' demanding construction of a dam across Cauvery river at Mekedatu. The state government had imposed restrictions during the period fearing the third wave of COVID-19 outbreak.

    The Ramco Cements Q4 profit down 45% at Rs 118 cr

    The Ramco Cements Ltd on Monday reported a decline of 45.22 per cent in consolidated net profit at Rs 118.27 crore for the fourth quarter ended March. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 215.92 crore during the March quarter of the previous fiscal, The Ramco Cements said in a regulatory filing. Total revenue was up 4.94 per cent at Rs 1,722.68 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 1,641.53 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

    UK brings in isolation measures to contain monkeypox spread

    Anyone who has had direct or household contact with a confirmed case of monkeypox, and therefore at the highest risk of having caught the rare virus, is being advised to isolate for 21 days by UK health authorities in updated advice on Monday. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said close contacts of someone with “unprotected direct contact” with a confirmed case of monkeypox are advised to provide their details for contact tracing, forgo travel, and avoid contact with immunosuppressed people, pregnant women, and children under 12. The agency is also providing close contacts of such cases with an established smallpox vaccine that can help protect against monkeypox.

    Delhi: 8 people injured as buildings collapsed following heavy rains, storm

    • Houses collapsed in Jawalpuri, Gokalpuri, Shankar road and Moti Nagar areas.

    ECB exit from negative interest rates 'likely' by end of Q3: Lagarde
