What is International Women's Day?

Normally, International Women's Day would be celebrated via worldwide parades and marches, as seen here in Melbourne in 2019.

International Women's Day was first honored on a global level in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The United Nations officially adopted the holiday in the '70s and started the tradition of an annual theme in 1996. This year's motif is #ChoosetoChallenge, an opportunity for individuals to reflect on our thoughts and actions to question gender bias and inequality.

The celebration, which is is typically marked by nationwide parades and festivals, will be signified by virtual parties in their place.
