POET “breakthrough” in cellulosic ethanol production

The nation’s largest ethanol producer says it’s made a breakthrough in cellulosic ethanol production. Matt Merritt with POET-DSM tells Brownfield they are using a combination of heat, pressure and acid to break down materials to get the sugar out of corn stover and other feedstocks, the biggest hurdle in production until now, “The good news is that we really think we’re on a track right now to enable this technology to start going out across the country and the world in the foreseeable future.” Merritt says they’re using the technology at their Emmetsburg, Iowa “Project Liberty” plant and they will soon be licensing it to others. In a time of low commodity prices for crops, Merritt says farmers will be able to benefit from the added value this will provide.
