Ethanol producers fuel debate, lash out at Sen. Ted Cruz
Iowa ethanol producers lashed out at Texas Sen. Ted Cruz Friday.
They say the senator’s plan for renewable fuel standards credits would decimate Iowa's agriculture industry.
RFS requires biofuels from corn and soybeans to be blended into gasoline and diesel. Industry leaders argue that a new study shows Cruz's plan to ease RFS would cause corn prices to drop, leading to disastrous results.
"During the campaign, President Trump gave Cruz the nickname 'Lyin' Ted' and I would suggest that this report would seem to back that," said Monte Shaw, with the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association. "We've had declining farm income for four years in a row. This could really be what pushes us into a really bad place."
Ethanol industry leaders plan to visit the White House Monday to lobby Trump on RFS.
